Paramedic Courses – Facts You Must Know
Paramedic courses are needed for you to learn how to save lives. Through these classes, you will learn how to provide emergency medical care to patients before they are brought to the hospital. This includes situations like the splintering of fractured limbs to assisting people who have taken a drug overdose. Some victims also need to be stabilized before they can be moved to a hospital. The paramedic program will include classroom, lab and field training for aspiring paramedics.
There are three levels of training that a paramedic must go through. The first is the EMT-Basic, followed by the EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic. All three will give you the appropriate knowledge to help you function effectively as a paramedic. The paramedic courses that you will take include several pre-hospital medical procedures that include treating cardiac arrest and administering drugs and IVs. These will also teach you how to differentiate between a heart attack, a drug overdose and a respiratory problem so you know what treatment it requires.
Due to the importance of a paramedic’s job, the government came up with a Paramedic National Standard Curriculum back in 1985. This is being followed until today by the paramedic schools that are run by local hospitals and community colleges. It takes between 6 months to two years to complete the course.
Subjects in paramedic courses include advance courses on Human Anatomy and Physiology. These subjects are responsible for helping paramedics assess a patient’s health condition. The study of the structures and tissues in a human body allows them to identify illnesses and injuries so they know how to treat the patients and stabilize their condition.
Students also have a special class for treating traumatized victims. It is a combination of theoretical and situational analysis so the paramedic is able to respond to tense situations and provide immediate life saving procedures. Another class that aspiring paramedics are supposed to take is the study on the human respiratory system and how to detect if the patient is suffering an illness or injury in this system.
Pharmacology is included in paramedic courses as well. In this subject, the paramedic to be is taught how to use and calculate medication in a pre hospital setting. This is where they are trained how to administer medical injections on patients to save their lives or simply stabilize them so it becomes safe for them to be transferred to a hospital for proper treatment.
One of the benefits of paramedic courses is that they usually include a practical or internship. Here, students are immersed in a professional environment and are sometimes asked to participate. This is good exposure for them as they get a feel of the working condition that they will be experiencing everyday. They get to ride in ambulances as paramedics respond to emergency 911 calls. Once you successfully complete the paramedic program, you get to qualify to apply for your certification/license.
Paramedic courses are important because you need to keep up with current medical practices. You can choose to take the course in a campus or in a hospital. They are also available online however the hands-on training is still required in a professional environment. Those who are just out of high school or are in a different field and want to shift to be a paramedic, the courses you will take are longer. You will need to go through all 3 levels of a paramedic training. Current paramedics also need to take refresher paramedic courses to keep their license.
